Our Volunteer Stories
Ana

What advice would you give to someone looking to volunteer with us?
A: As a volunteer who joined without prior experience, my advice to prospective volunteers is not to be discouraged by a lack of experience. While it may initially feel daunting you will receive continuous support from both fellow volunteers and staff members. Comprehensive online training is also provided, covering all aspects of the centre and the responsibilities of a volunteer. From the outset, staff and volunteers ensure that you are well-informed and never left to manage tasks alone if you feel uncertain or uncomfortable.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience? :
A: The most rewarding aspect of my experience has been witnessing families strengthen their relationships during their time at the centre, It is incredibly fulfilling to observe this development, as it highlights the significant progress made by the families and the positive impact the experience has had on the children. As a volunteer, being part of that journey has been truly meaningful.

What would you tell a volunteer about the importance of thier role? :
A: As a charitable organisation, the Newport Family Centre relies heavily on the dedication and support of its volunteers. Without them, the centre’s operations would not be possible. By volunteering, you are making a meaningful difference in the lives of many families who might otherwise be unable to afford the high costs typically associated with contact services.

The role of a volunteer is vital, involving regular interaction with both children and their parents. While the centre aims to provide a positive and welcoming environment, for some families, attending may be challenging or emotionally complex. It is therefore essential that volunteers help create a supportive and comfortable atmosphere, offering reassurance and guidance throughout their time at the centre.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience? :
A: The most rewarding part of my experience has been being able to support children and caregivers in the visitation process. Having children leave their visits happy and feeling connected with thier family member is a wonderful feeling when you've been part of the support system.

How would you describe the atmosphere and support at the centre? :
A: I would describe the atmosphere at the centre as open and welcoming: we help families from many backgrounds so being non-judgmental and open-minded is crucial, this extends to the workers as well. In terms of support, the training was very accessible, and the communication throughout my time at the centre has been wonderful.

What skills and qualities have you developed/strengthened during your time volunteering? :
I've developed my mediation skills in dealing with complicated family dynamics, as well as my observation and organisational skills.
